Alder
Alder—aka “poor man’s cherry”—has a similar grain and coloring to cherry. It’s a soft wood, but is very light and wonderful for cabinetry. We built our showroom cabinets out of alder. An interesting bit of alder trivia—it’s also a great wood for electric guitar bodies and is used notably by Fender for their Stratocasters and Jaguars.
-
Beech
Currently our most frequently used wood species. Typically imported from Europe, beech wood is responsibly harvested. It is a good hard wood, softer than maple but harder than oak. The grain pattern is visible and distinct but less “swirly” than oak. More information is available here.
-
Cherry
Cherry is a beautiful wood for cabinets. It has a distinct grain pattern and takes a finish beautifully. It is durable and will darken slightly over time when exposed to sunlight.
-
Maple
Maple is a very hard wood that takes finish and paint well. It is a beautiful wood for cabinetry. Its grain pattern is less strong than beech, cherry or oak, but it is quite beautiful. More information about maple.
-
Oak
Oak has a very strong grain pattern and is somewhat soft. It is a very traditional material and is well suited for cabinetry.

Walnut
Walnut is a wonderful traditional wood for furniture and musical instruments. We have built cabinets from walnut throughout the years, and can build beautiful custom kitchen cabinetry out of walnut wood. From wikipedia, ”the common walnut and the black walnut and its allies, are important for their attractive timber, which is hard, dense, tight-grained and polishes to a very smooth finish. The colour ranges from creamy white in the sapwood to a dark chocolate colour in the heartwood… Because of its colour, hardness and grain it is a prized furniture and carving wood.”
